About Lotus & Lineage
Lotus & Lineage is an independent, English-language journal about thangka painting and Himalayan Buddhist art.

Why this journal exists
Many people first meet a thangka in a shop, a museum or a friend's home and are struck by its colour and calm. Then come the questions. Who is this figure? Why does she have seven eyes? Why are some thangkas full of gold while others are almost entirely painted in blue and green? Clear answers can be surprisingly hard to find, and much of what is online is either very academic or very thin.
This journal tries to sit in the middle: accurate enough to be trusted, written simply enough to be enjoyed.
What we believe
- Respect first. Thangkas are sacred images for millions of practitioners. We write about them with care.
- Accuracy over hype. We do not invent stories, statistics or claims, and we note where traditions differ.
- Craft matters. Behind every good thangka is a painter who trained for years. We want readers to see and value that skill.
How we write
Our articles draw on the long-standing descriptions of deities and painting methods used in the Himalayan traditions, and on close looking at historical paintings held in public collections. The images on this site are historical works shared by museums as public-domain images.
We hope Lotus & Lineage helps you look at thangka painting with fresh eyes, whether you are a practitioner, a collector or simply curious.
