In-depth deity guides

Long-form explanations of individual figures such as Buddhas, bodhisattvas and female deities. Each guide covers the figure's colour, posture, hand gestures, attributes and place in Buddhist practice, so that you can identify them in a painting and understand why they matter to practitioners.

Craft and technique explainers

Thangka painting is a disciplined craft. We explain the stages a painter works through, from preparing the cotton canvas and drawing the proportion grid to laying down colour, outlining in gold and finishing the faces. Knowing these stages helps you appreciate the hours inside a single painting.

Iconography notes

Short reference notes on symbols that appear again and again: lotus thrones, aureoles, the eight auspicious symbols, offering goddesses, landscape elements and the meaning behind common colours. These are designed to be read alongside the deity guides.

Buyer's reading list

If you are thinking about owning a thangka, our guides point out what to look at closely: the clarity of the line work, the balance of the proportions, the quality of the faces and eyes, and the use of genuine gold. We stay independent, so the focus is always on helping you look carefully.

Reader questions

Readers sometimes write in with a question about a figure or a symbol. When a question is useful to many people, we turn the answer into a new article. You can send yours through the Contact page.
